ARTIST STATEMENT
I find inspiration in all different parts of the world. I am often motivated by poetry and metaphor, which I find all around me. I love finding stories in the things around me, like a shadow or a bird. I am often inspired by my queerness and how that colours my perception of the world. I used to not care about my art having meaning, I was motivated solely by making something pretty. I have grown to understand how meaning can elevate a piece. I also learned a lot about art-making and now I can approach it with techniques instead of just intuition.
To start a new artwork, I like to think about it a lot and imagine what I want it to become. I experiment with collage, gesture painting, and realism. I enjoy the process of making the beginning strides that turn the raw materials into art. This part of the process, I find, is often the most tactile and the progress is most obvious. I know a work is done when it matches what is in my head or what I was trying to make. I often have a hard time knowing when it's done. When I can tell I am close to being done, I take breaks and come back with fresh eyes.
